Factfile: BSEN-1729- The new standard for classroom furniture in all UK schools
Worried about health and safety with classroom furniture? Back pain a concern? concentration levels of chidren need improving? All these are being addressed by a new European standard for educational furniture. There is now a new standard specifically for tables, desks and chairs for use in UK schools: BSEN1729. This is the only current and valid standard for classroom furniture.
What is the new standard?
The new standard is split into two parts: Size and shape of products - checks functional dimensions and ensures correct ergonomics for children's back care. Strength and stability - checks product saftey and ensures products will stand up to classroom demands. Any product must pass both parts to fully comply with BSEN1729.
Why is there a new standard?
It is many years since the standard for classroom furniture was reviewed and during that time the average size of children has increased. BESA and FIRA worked together to collect data on body sizes of over 1500 young people. As a result it was found that furniture sizes need to increase. This means that height-adjustable furniture may be appropriate and children's furniture needs to be ergonomically correct. The new standard requires furniture to be properly shaped to help prevent long term damage to children's backs. The new standard also sets out tests for the strength and stability of products to make sure they can stand up to the rigours of school use.
Is the use of the standard compulsory?
In the UK the standard is advisory only. But everyone involved in the provision of furniture for has a duty of care and it makes sense to provide furniture which meets BSEN1729.
Do I have to throw away my current furniture?
No. But as you buy new furniture you ought to consider changing to products which comply with BSEN1729.
What are the new sizes?
The standard now specifies 6 different sizes (heights). The standard allows manufacturers to make products at heights +/- 10mm to those shown.
| SIZE MARK | AGE GUIDE | FOOT COLOUR CODE | CHAIR SEAT HEIGHT | TABLE HEIGHT |
| 1 | 3-4 | ORANGE | 260MM | 460MM |
| 2 | 4-6 | VIOLET | 310MM | 530MM |
| 3 | 6-8 | YELLOW | 350MM | 590MM |
| 4 | 8-11 | RED | 380MM | 640MM |
| 5 | 11-14 | GREEN | 430MM | 710MM |
| 6 | 14+ | BLUE | 460MM | 760MM |
Can I buy old sized furniture?
Some manufacturers may make old sizes by special request for a period of time but all school furniture suppliers do need to move to the new standard - and there are very good health & saftey reasons to do so! Some catalgues may include some new products at old sizes but as new manufacturers move to BSEN1729 they will change to the new sizes.
Any advice?
Please be careful when you order new products. If on doubt, ask us for advice. The new table and chair sizes are typically 10-20mm different to the old sizes and their heights will probably not match up with existing furniture in your classrooms. Old and new chair sizes may not stack together perfectly. If existing chairs and tables have colour coded feet, do not rely on these colours for ordering new furniture. BSEN1729 has changed some of these colours from those in the previous standard. Advice on the sizes of furniture can be found at http://schoolfurniture.uk.com
